 Swami Vivekananda (1863–1902) Swami Vivekananda was a renowned Indian Hindu monk, philosopher, and spiritual leader who played a key role in introducing Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga to the Western world. Birth Name: Narendranath Datta Born: January 12, 1863, in Kolkata (then Calcutta), India Died: July 4, 1902, at the age of 39 Early Life: Narendranath was born into a well-educated Bengali family. From a young age, he showed great interest in spirituality and philosophy. He was a bright student, well-versed in literature, music, and studies. Spiritual Journey: Narendranath met Sri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, a mystic saint, who became his spiritual teacher. After Ramakrishna’s death in 1886, Narendra became a monk and took the name Swami Vivekananda.
